Dwayne Sanburn (owner/operator) has carefully orchestrated this exceptional haunted house so that there is never a dull second. Always one of our favorite Halloween Events is the Headless Horseman Show put on by founders, Michael and Nancy Jubie. When it comes to scary and entertaining haunted houses and hayrides these guys get it. It doesn't hurt that the setting is a 250 year-old farm which incorporates over sixty -five acres of naturally landscaped property including foreboding woods, surreal ponds and fruit orchards.

Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Houses deliver visitors a unique, immersive experience that startles and entertains. This is one of the few attractions of this size that offers as many changes as they do each Halloween season. When it comes to HellsGate, we have 2 words for you... John LaFlamboy. LaFlamboy, who founded HellsGate, has been in the theatrical business for many years. His education in theater and acting certainly assisted him in branching into the haunted house industry. In fact, John has an interest or ownership in not only Hellsgate but also other great haunts including: Statesville Haunted Prison, Fear at Navy Pier and City of the Dead.

One of John's hot buttons for years was to bring life the rumored haunted house where you could get your money back by making your way through it. LaFlamboy and his Zombie Army put a little twist to the idea and has built a haunt where, if you find the key, you get your visit for free. Add a giant slide and an exciting trip through the Cemetery of Lost Souls, a haunted woods and what do you get... HellsGate!

John and his Zombie Army created, designed and built this cool attraction and they went, let's just say a little crazy (for Zombie Army that translates to crazy as hell). The adventure begins with your outside journey but quickly builds as you enter the 1920's style Victorian mansion (Moorstone Manor) and you cautiously enter the front door. And you thought that just because you made your way through darkness and zombies you were home free. Guess again! We won't give away all of the amazing surprises that await you - but we do say watch for the Dragon Room, one of our favorite haunted house rooms in America this year!

One of the largest shows in the haunted house and Halloween industry is certainly the Fear Itself Show at Legend Park. This show features over 100 actors plus another 25 support staff. It showcases 5 major (and we do mean major) attractions. Any one of the Fear Itself attractions could be successful stand alone haunts. The creative team at Legend Park has a reputation industry-wide for extremely themed attractions. One of the more popular Fear Itself attractions, the Cuckoo’s Nest was at one time named by Haunted Attraction Magazine “the best haunted house of all time”. It is as convincing as it is unnerving. Another of the haunts at Fear Itself is the Sinister Circus, the largest Dark Circus on the planet. This is no ordinary haunted circus. It’s filled with both fun, scary things including the longest spinning tunnel and the longest claustrophobia in the industry.

This season Fear Itself added the all new Father Timeless Diaries with 13 Volumes (a new design and story every year). Father Timeless features a Hellevator ride that is in excess of 2 minutes. #6 STATESVILLE HAUNTED PRISON

Statesville Haunted Prison has been known as one of the country’s absolute scariest haunts for years! Don’t even consider bringing a child under the age of 11 through, it’s just too much for the young and pure-hearted! Statesville is also one of the largest haunted houses in the country when it comes to acting staff (150 plus). There is a certain reality at Statesville that is absolutely unsettling to visitors of the haunted prison. Maybe it’s the abundance of actors, maybe it’s the reality of the scenes or possibly it’s the appropriately-interactive cast and their belittling comments made to guests. Regardless, when you visit Statesville you will feel as if you are a prisoner to the haunt instead of a guest! This is an in-your-face experience that leaves guests with an image burnt into their tiny little brains, the kind of image that returns again and again like a reoccurring nightmare.

Statesville Haunted Prison is one of the scariest and most entertaining dark shows in the world and absolutely the best haunted prison in the country. Congratulations to this amazing haunted house for making it to #6 on our list of the Top 13 Haunted Houses in America.

#7 EREBUS HAUNTED HOUSE

Brothers Ed and Jim Terebus don’t like to do things small; in fact, they don’t know what small is. That’s probably why their Halloween spectacular creation, Erebus Haunted House in Pontiac, is not only the largest haunted house in Michigan; it’s also one of the largest haunted houses in the world.

Erebus was actually the longest walk through haunted house in the world at one time and made its way into the Guinness World Records book. Today the 4 story haunt still stands high above most other haunted houses. It is no doubt a journey as visitors hike through the inside attraction that just happens to be over ½ mile long. Combine that trek with scares (pretty much at every corner) and what do you get? A hell of a lot of scares and startles, that’s exactly what you get.

Big isn’t the only reason that Erebus is high on our list this season, our judges also agree that Ed and Jim, unlike many haunt owners, like to take a dissimilar approach to their Halloween Attraction. Known as a very unique haunted house, Erebus is filled with very distinctive scares. We won’t ruin the adventure by sharing the scaring but you can be sure that in this gigantic haunted house you will stumble on some of the most teeth-clenching, jaw-dropping, hair-raising scenes and surprises that you will see in the haunted house industry. That might explain why once again Erebus has a high ranking in ZZZippy’s Best Haunted Houses in America.

All the way to #8 on ZZZippy’s Best Haunted Houses in America is the Bates Hotel & Haunted Hayride. Randy Bates in simply a master in the haunted house industry, especially when it comes to Haunted Hayrides! If you visit the Randy’s popular (nearly famous) Halloween venue you will quickly see how he delivers the scare in his attractions. Bates combines exceptional props, digital effects and superior actors to deliver guests one frantic scare after another. However, this season it was bates’ infamous Haunted Hayride that had judges throwing points at him and his venue. This haunted hayride is as good as it gets and Bates has the actors, the property, the sets, the effects and the timing that come together like a well oiled monster to blow away visitors night after night after night. Once again Randy Bates and his Bates Motel & Haunted Hayride made the cut for our Top 13 Haunted Houses in America.

#9 DEAD ACRES HAUNTED HOOCHIE

Dead Acres Haunted Hoochie also moved this year in ZZZippy’s Top 25 Haunted Houses in America. Last time around Dead Acres made its way clear up to number 11 but this year they squeaked up into the top 10. If you don’t mind controversy and gore because at this haunted attraction you are going to get your fill of both. If you ask Tim May who owns the haunt he will quickly tell you that Dead Acres is the most radical haunted house in the world. We think May might very well be right, especially since his radical rival in New Orleans, House of Shock, closed last season. From the moment you pull up the drive to visit this haunted house you realize this place is totally screwed up. It’s far-reaching, gut-spilling and distinctively outrageous. The wait is long but once you’re in so is the show. The Haunted Hoochie extremism is undoubtedly what swayed our judges to name this attraction in the Top 10 Best Haunted Houses in America this year!

The last time House of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs made ZZZippy’s list of the best, scariest and most radical haunts in the country they were voted a very respectable #17. However, Tim Bunch, owner/operator and creative behind this great attraction, has made substantial headway as this over-the-top haunt has earned a spot in the Top 10 Best Haunts in America. Just outside of Buffalo, New York, Bunch and his respected Halloween venue have continued to build one of the scariest haunted houses in New York. Hell, let’s face it, according to our judges, the House of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs is actually one of the scariest haunted houses in America.

If you visit the House of Horrors expect to be frightened, startled and freaked out by not only some really excellent actors but you will also be startled and shaken by a slew of animatronics and mechanical scare devices. Tim prides himself on keeping up with the latest technology and investing back into his haunt to make it better every year. We feel there’s another reason for Tim’s success; his passion for the industry and mixed with his personal charisma and his dedication to giving his guests the very best show possible. This all adds up to making an amazing Halloween attraction.

Nearly 20 years later Bunch continues to improve what is already one of America’s best haunts… the House of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs.

#11 DENT SCHOOL HOUSE

Josh Wells, Chuck Stross and Bud Stross took a unique approach when they adapted an unusual theme with a twist which made for an extremely disturbing haunted house that is known as the Dent School House. The three acquired the actual schoolhouse from a local charity but they soon discovered it had a very dark and disturbing history. So they did what any good haunt owner would do, they exploited the hell out of it. When you mix dark, Halloween, haunted houses and school children, what do you get? The Dent School House, an haunted attraction that was good enough to rate in America’s Top 25 Best Haunted Houses this year.

We could unfold the entire Dent Schoolhouse story, show you where the scare will come from and share with you all of the little surprises but instead we will just highly recommend it as one of the scariest haunted houses in the country this Halloween season!

#12 TERROR BEHIND THE WALLS

Terror Behind the Walls! Even the name makes you pause in anticipation prior to you entering this mammoth haunted attraction. This haunted House (prison) is consistently ranked as one of the best haunted house attractions in the country. Located in Philadelphia, Terror Behind the Walls takes guests to a whole new dimension when it comes to Halloween activities. This year is no exception as they continue their legacy of building and designing within the walls of what was once a real prison. This season Terror was unleashed as their Infirmary was revamped and now visitors are taken on a dark, dreary and bloody tour where they encounter crazy doctors, disorderly orderlies, nightmarish nurses and medical practices that will turn a real-life doctors guts inside out. Though the Infirmary is new it’s only one of the 6 haunted attractions that visitors will experience during their visit (or their stay) at this crazy, realistic haunted place.

The setting for Terror Behind the Walls has always been exceptional but this season it stands out to the point where our judges named it in the Top 25 Haunted Houses in America!

EVIL INTENTIONS

Elgin, Illinois just happens to be home to one of the craziest and most radical haunts you will ever participate in. Yes, we said participate in. The haunt, Evil Intentions, like many of our other haunted house winners this season is, let's just say extremely unique. One of the things that make this dark attraction so unusual is the fact that many of its guests claim to have recorded actual encounters with the dead. Hey, that’s what they say and who are we to argue? According to Evil Intentions and many of their guests… this is a real haunt!

Well if you consider the fact that it is housed in what was once casket company in Illinois, you could only imagine the amount of death and decay within the walls of this evil place. Only the willing will visit and only the bravest will make it all the way through. I know we’ve all heard that before but a haunt in a casket company, c’mon, that makes brings a little more credibility to this common phrase. Trust us, a few of our judges have walked the halls of this haunt and some of them claimed to have barely made it through.

As the sets aren’t so much sets because it was originally built pretty creepy in the first place, it’s difficult to determine what is real and what isn’t. Is that really an actor creeping through that tiny hole near me… or is it another one of the fallen from a creaking, old casket from years before? At Evil Intentions, maybe it’s not a show at all - maybe this really is the real thing.

This all adds to the mystic that has earned Evil Intentions our final spot in ZZZippy’s Top 13 Haunted Houses in America!

TIM BUNCH

Tim Bunch is the owner of House Of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs and Locked Up Escape Games in Buffalo, NY. Tim is known throughout the Haunted House Industry as one of its most respected leaders. He is also considered one of the easiest guys to work with and one of the most likable.

Tim's House of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs is recognized throughout the United States as being one of the the top and most edgy haunts in America winning many awards from USA Today, Buzzfeed.com and more. After nearly 2 decades the House Of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs keeps upping ante in the Buffalo area with more frights, scares, jaw dropping sets, and insane characters!

Also housed in the massive 50,000 sq ft indoor facility is Locked Up Escape Games- some of the most elaborate escape rooms in the country. With 3 world class escape rooms currently running... and more in coming months, Locked Up Escape Games is considered one of the go to escape room facility in the Western New York area.

As a true entrepreneur, Bunch spends most of the year running Majestic Pools and Spas, a family owned swimming pool and hot tub company. He is also an avid rock and roll enthusiast and occasionally you'll find him touring with well-known international rock bands.

EDDIE MCLAURIN
Eddie McLaurin has been in the haunting business for nearly 3 decades. He has transformed his haunted attraction, Woods of Terror in Greensboro, NC into one of the most touted and talked about haunts in America every year. Each season he takes his attractions over the top and ensures they are bigger and scarier than the previous year. His haunt is now home to twelve terrifying attractions with everything from giant spiders to pirates to some of the scariest clowns you’ll ever see.

Woods of Terror has received many awards and kudos over the years- it has been rated the number one haunted attraction by hauntrater, has been rated in USA today, buzzfeed, haunted attraction magazine and other media.

Eddie is a showman when it comes to his attraction, and a kind and caring gentleman when it comes to his heart. He is also quite the patriot. Woods of Terror also features the first ever Monster Midway Parade that charges in right after the gates open nightly, then Eddie himself sings the National Anthem with the Woods of Terror band, which is made up of his very own actors.

KRIS ZAHROBSKY

Zahrobsky is the founder of Haunted House Chicago. Supporting, promoting, and reviewing haunted attractions in the Chicagoland market since 1999, Kris personally leads a team that sees nearly 50 attractions each year, writes about their experiences, and compiles an annual ‘Top 13’ list of the best attractions within 100-miles of Chicago. In addition, they award an annual award to the best actor/actress witnessed during their tours

Kris’ love affair with Haunted Houses began at an early age.

His passion for the business grew until he eventually launched Haunted House Chicago and HauntedHouseChicago.com. Although Kris sold Haunted House Chicago in 2008, the new owners insisted that Kris remain as the Chief Reviewer and head of the Haunted House Chicago Review Team.

Kris has a feverish passion for Haunted Houses as well as for reviewing them. He is passionate about his visits and personable which seems to give him an inside edge with haunt owners. He is undoubtedly one of the very best haunt reviewers in the country and certainly one of the most respected.

PETE KARLOWICZ

Pete is the Owner of the Niles Scream Park in Niles, Michigan. He attended the University of Notre Dame Law School where he obtained a Juris Doctorate in Law in 1980.

After graduating Notre Dame, Pete decided to help a local haunted house known as the Niles Jaycees Haunted House in Niles. As its popularity grew, the project moved to various locations in an attempt to accommodate the demand. Before long, the Niles Haunted House saw the dawn of a Scream Park on forty-four acres, complete with seven attractions, food vendors, games and entertainment.

During his career, Karlowicz assisted in the legal development of IAHA (International Association of Haunted Attractions) in 1998, the HHA (Haunted House Association) in 2008 and the HAA (Haunted Attraction Association). His contributions to those organizations have been substantial to say the least.

Each Fall Pete visits haunted attractions around the country. He estimates that he has visited about 500 attractions since 1980.

Karlowicz is a gracious host at his Niles Michigan event and is extremely generous with his time. Pete is also extremely savvy and has led the Niles Scream Park to substantial success over the years and does especially well with young haunted house goers.

BERT ZELTEN
Bert is the founder of Minispotlight.com. He and his wife Kim are co-owners of the Wisconsin company that they started nearly 2 decadades ago. Bert is a haunted house owner (he has started or been involved in several of the years). He is also an avid haunt enthusiast.

Bert is well respected and well liked in the industry and considered one of the cutting edge guys when it comes to electronics, lighting and special effects.

Zelten has also created "the Living Dot Room" an effective and uncanny room filled with changing LED min spotlights, where mixed colors dance, daze and confuse guests. More recently he developed his LED Warp Tunnel. Another totally uniques special effect that wows visitors,

LEONARD PICKLEL
Innovator, Designer, Artist, Inventor, Teacher, Writer, Leader

Leonard Pickel has designed over 300 commercial Themed Attractions. Since 1976, over 3 million people from throughout the country have experienced the "Pickel Theory" of Walk-Through Attraction Design.

Leonard's innovations include the Triangular Grid System, original Blue Room, Pepper’s Ghost Illusions, and unique Mirror Illusions. His inventive scare techniques are published in a book called the Room Design Idea Book.

Pickel has presented at every major themed attraction conference in the and Canada, including: IAAPA, Transworld, HAuNTcon, MHC and WCHC and more.

As editor of Haunted Attraction Magazine, he's published a vast array of technical articles and descriptive narratives.

As a Project manager, Pickel has decades of experience wrangling both construction and install crews, while comforting project owners through communication, and by staying on schedule and on budget.

Known throughout the October seasonal attraction industry, Pickel has put his mark on the industry. Now in his 40th year in the business, Pickel’s opinions and advice are sought out and coveted by both new and veteran business owners alike.

CHAD SAVAGE
Chad Savage is an award-winning dark artist and visual designer who has been in the service of all things sinister and spooky since his first Halloween. Savage's illustrations have appeared in and on numerous books and magazines.

In addition, Chad's custom-made horror fonts are ubiquitous in the haunted attraction industry. If you've been to a haunted attraction over the last several years there's a very real chance that he designed their marketing materials and website... or has made a contribution somewhere within.

Chad has a unique sense of humor but a serious side when it comes to designing over-the-top graphics for the haunt and horror industries. He is considered one of the most talented professional in the industry.
