Fog It Up, a rockin' special effects company nestled nicely in San Dimas, California (in Los Angeles County) is quickly becoming one of those players. Fog It Up not only provides their customers with a complete line of effects fogs and fluids; they also provide the equipment and machines to make those effects come to life. The company set up shop in 2012 and was founded by Joseph Olaerts, a business owner who is passionate about the special effects industry. According to Joseph, they've been successful due to their philosophy. "This is a cool industry with tons of talented people. We are fortunate that our customer base is made up of various types of entertainment venues... and they all have different backgrounds. However, our customers have one thing in common, they all insist on effects at competitive prices. That's exactly why we keep growing, because of our mission which as we say is to provide our customers low cost high quality special effects. That philosophy has really worked well for us at Fog It Up."After speaking with a couple of Fog It Up customers, that seems to be the common thread for their success: producing quality special effects at extremely reasonable prices. Let's face it, we all want quality... yet we all want great deals. While this sounds like a simple combination, it's not one that typically gets pulled off by most business owners, but the Fog It Up Team seems to be doing a pretty good job of it.
Competing in the World of Special Effects
In the special effects industry you better have some serious advantages because you're dealing with savvy buyers as well as playing in an industry that has some exceptional competitors. Olaerts realizes this, "We didn't get into the industry because of lack of competition, there are some excellent special effects suppliers out there. We got into it because some special effects, especially fog and other fluids are expensive to ship and customers on the west coast were paying a premium for shipping. Liquid is heavy, shipping is expensive. So initially we had a real competitive advantage on the west coast and in west/southwest states just because of that. However, after time we were able to also begin making our products more and more affordable, so now we are the ones that have the advantage both in quality and in price."
According to Joseph, that is not the only competitive advantage that Fog It Up has. "We also have a great team of people who really care about our customers and I really feel like our customer service is unparalleled. This is like family, we protect each other and our customers. That has also played a significant role in our success."
